On October 7, 2026, Google began testing a new Direct Offer asset for AI Mode campaigns. For ecommerce brands running AI Max or text customization campaigns, this means your promotions can now appear as a "Claim one-time code" offer beneath your sponsored result inside Google AI Mode, where Shopping ad visibility currently sits below 2% for most product catalogs.
Direct Offer is a manually controlled campaign asset, not the same as Automated Promotions going live October 12. You define the promo, the incentive value, and the single-use code pool. Google's AI determines which high-intent shoppers see it and can generate offer text based on your description. The result is an exclusive, personalized deal inside AI Mode that competing brands without the asset cannot match.
When active, Direct Offer creates a "Claim one-time code" option beneath your sponsored AI Mode result. A shopper who taps it sees your promo details, the code, and a link to your store. Here is what you configure in Google Ads:
The asset currently surfaces inside the AI Mode product viewer and is expanding to the AI Mode answer section, meaning your offer can appear alongside Google's AI-generated product summaries, not only in the product carousel below.
AI Mode traffic is growing, and Shopping ad overlap with AI Mode organic results sits below 2% for most catalogs (per BrightEdge research we covered in September 2026). Paid sponsored placements are the primary way to appear in AI Mode at all. Adding a Direct Offer asset to those placements creates a conversion layer, a personalized exclusive deal, that organic results cannot replicate.
Two other Google changes make getting this right before October 12 especially important:
For brands working with an experienced Google Ads partner to build their AI Mode strategy before Q4, this is the configuration window that matters. See everything Google has changed in 2026 in our full Google Ads update tracker.

Direct Offer is currently available only for campaigns using AI Max or text customization. Standard Search, Performance Max without text customization, and Shopping campaigns are not eligible at launch. You must have AI Max enabled or text customization turned on at the campaign level to see the Direct Offer option in Assets.
Automated Promotions (launching October 12) read your website automatically and attach deals to eligible campaigns without manual input. Direct Offer is a manually built asset you create yourself, with your exact promo codes, incentive value, and date range. You control the offer; Google's AI only determines which shoppers to show it to based on your description.
Once all uploaded codes are claimed, Google stops showing the Direct Offer to new shoppers until you upload a new code CSV. Your daily claim limit slows the rate of depletion, but plan your code volume for the full promotional window before launching. You can upload a refreshed CSV without resetting the campaign or its performance data.
Add UTM parameters to your final URL (utm_source=google, utm_medium=direct-offer, utm_campaign=bfcm2026) to identify redemptions in GA4 and your attribution platform. Google is also rolling out dedicated Direct Offer reporting columns in Ads Manager in the coming weeks, which will show impressions, claim counts, and cost per claim inside the campaign view.
